Hibiki (#12) is one of the two Sekirei bonded to Seo Kaoru, distinguished from her twin sister Hikari by her quieter and calmer disposition. She was adjusted by Asama Takehito[1]. Both women have the power to manipulate lightning/electricity. In the first and second stages of the Sekirei Plan, Hibiki seeks to fight unwinged Sekirei together with Hikari. It is later stated by Homura that although she and her sister are "underdogs", they have more expertise in fighting than himself[1].

She is aware that Seo is not the most impressive of Ashikabi (which gives her and Hikari the reputation of being the Sekirei of the "Loser Ashikabi"), but they both care for and are willing to defend him. They refuse to let Seo wing or even flirt with any other Sekirei by striking Seo with lightning[2]. Her name means "sound" literally or "thunder" allegorically.

Appearance

Hibiki in her leisure outfit

Hibiki is tall with a slender build. She has long black hair that she wears in two ponytails and hazel eyes. Despite being Hikari's twin sister and looking exactly like her, the only physical difference between the two is that Hibiki's bust is significantly smaller.

In the anime Hibiki wears a purple or pink bodysuit (a brighter one in the manga). Minato often referred to the sisters in the beginning of the series as the "Onee-chans with S&M clothes".

Personality

Hibiki is the absolute opposite of her twin sister Hikari. She is calm, mature, and composed and often suffers from the short-tempered and immature attitude of her twin sister.

Abilities and Powers

She has the power of manipulating electricity. Her Norito is a rather unique one, because she seems to only be able to use it together with Hikari. The prayer "We're the pledged thunderclap. No disaster will hit our Ashikabi!" causes a huge, often indiscriminate lightning strike[2].

Attacks:

  • Kaminari (God's Song)-Norito technique.
  • Karitachi No Ikachuzi (Thunder of Standing Needles).[3]

History

Nothing is known about her past except that Asama Takehito was her tuner[1], and that she was eventually winged by Seo, along with Hikari.

Synopsis

Hibiki and Hikari are first seen confronting Musubi as part of their strategy of winning the Sekirei Plan by targeting unwinged (and thus weaker) Sekirei.[4] They are unsuccessful, both in terminating Musubi and preventing her from being winged by Minato. When both women attempt to continue the fight, Homura intervenes, and upon his threat, the two back down.

During one of Homura's sweeps of the city, he encounters the Lightning Twins, warning them (and by extension Seo) to stay away from the Green Girl.[5] After Minato and Seo meet through their mutual part-time job as construction workers, Hibiki and Hikari see them as they arrive to drop Seo's lunch off to him, leading to their usual routine of Seo angering the duo, and Hibiki eventually playing peacekeeper by getting Hikari to calm down.[6] After Seo and Minato agree to ally with one another in order to help Kusano, Hibiki and Hikari attack the MBI soldiers guarding the arboretum where Ku is hiding, causing a commotion that destroys and damages the blockades and vehicles.[7] They accompany the two Ashikabi on their search through the arboretum, and assail Yomi with lightning bolts when she attempts to attack Minato and Kusano.[8] When Homura encounters the duo while fighting Akitsu, they make it clear that they want to help Ku, not allow her to be forcibly winged or terminated.[9] They also cease attacking Yomi when Musubi inherits the fight, and eventually leave the scene safely. When Seo drops into Izumo Inn uninvited, the twins arrive to collect him.[10]

A few days later, the twins track down Tsukiumi, a very powerful, but unwinged Sekirei, and briefly fight her until Tsukiumi gains an advantage and forces them to flee.[11] After Minato resolves to find Tsukiumi, who is reacting to him, she and the twins bump into Seo and Minato as they run away from the Water Sekirei.[12] After the twins get Seo to activate their Norito the use their God Song cooperation technique to blast Tsukiumi, but Minato takes the hit, a major factor in him winning Tsukiumi over, and being able to wing her.[13] After the winging, the fight is all but over, and the twins and the others travel back to the inn, where Tsukiumi introduces herself to Miya.[14]

During the Second Stage of the Plan, the twins appear once more when Minato appeals to Seo for help at his apartment in an effort to allow for Haruka and Kuno to escape the city.[15] The two largely remain quiet as Seo explains the jist of the plan that he, them, Minato's group, and Haruka and Kuno will carry out to allow for the two to escape.[16] On the night of the escape, they do their part by blasting electrical substations and facilities allowing for the passage of trains in the area.[17]

The twins make a couple of minor appearances of little consequence after this, but their next important appearance occurs during the first matchup of the Third Stage of the Plan, as they are matched up against a team of Hayato Mikogami's Sekirei, as well as a team of Sanada's Sekirei, with a Jinki on the line.[18] As Mikogami and his Sekirei set to work, Hibiki and Hikari are drawn into a comedic and time-consuming situation with Seo, Sanada, Kuzuri, and Kujika. Mitsuki and Himeko, two of Mikogami's three present Sekirei, attack the twins shortly thereafter to prevent them from following Mikogami and Taki.[19] As the twins battle Sanada and Mikogami's Sekirei, getting minimally closer to the Jinki, Shijime, another of Sanada's flock finds and drops it, leading to Mikogami catching it and winning the match.[20] Despite the setback, Sanada and Seo form a bond that causes the twins to comment on the fitting nature of two idiots becoming friends.

During Miya's shared memories of the past, two Sekirei resembling the twins can be seen amongst the earlier group of Sekirei. During the Fourth Match of the Third Stage, through which Sanada, Seo, and Minato have agreed to an alliance, the twins' arrival at the match site with Seo causes several Ashikabi and Sekirei to duck the fight because of the rumours they've heard about Seo and Sanada.[21] In the enusing chaos of the match, Hibiki and Hikari terminate at least one Sekirei, and along with Seo, rampage through the opposition.[22]By the end of the match, the trio disermbark from the ship with one Jinki, allowing for them to continue on in the Plan's Fourth Stage on Kamikura Island.[23]

As the Ashikabi and Sekirei are brought to the island, Seo, Hibiki, and Hikari are matched up against Matsu, Tsukiumi, and Musubi.[24] During the fight, which is largely cordial and comedic, Hikari and Hibiki recall meeting Seo, with Hikari continuing to pretend she doesn't care about her Ashikabi, while Hibiki is more forthright in admitting that she cares for him.[25] After the twins use their Norito-amplified techniques to assault the trio, Musubi is able to grab the trio and launch them onto a ship monitoring the island, knocking them out of bounds and eliminating them. When the invasion begins, the twins want to move in, but Seo instructs them to wait, as Minato kisses Tsukiumi, allowing her to use a powerful new technique that would have jeopardized their safety if they had moved in.[26] The twins pick off stray enemies, but largely play a minor role in the climax.

After Minato wins the Plan, the twins are both pregnant, and eventually give birth to two sons each: Raizou, Raiden, Raimei, and Raigou.[27] They attend the celebratory party at the inn with their Ashikabi/husband and their sons.

During the epilogue/interlude, they are both still pregnant, and as part of the process see Miyajima for a checkup. They also defend the island during the epilogue's invasion of Kamikura.
