Mikogami Hayato (御子上 隼人), aka the Ashikabi of the South, is the Ashikabi controlling the southern section of Shinto Teito. He is a teenage academic prodigy from a wealthy family, and has been shown to be spiteful and petty, with no tolerance for failure. In his first appearance he seemed very cruel, wanting to wing Kusano at any cost and calling his own Sekirei useless[1][2]. Despite his unsavoury traits, Mikogami is also surprisingly moral in that does not appreciate when other participants in the Sekirei Plan do not follow the rules.[3] Later his lonely life, completely controlled by his neglectful parents, was revealed along with his wish for something new and exciting to happen in his life. This came true when he met his first Sekirei Mutsu, and subsequently began to participate in the game (Sekirei Plan).[4]

Appearance[]

Hayato is a slim teenage boy of average height with brown hair and hazel eyes. He has worn clothes apart from his usual attire in past appearances, as seen when he wore a hoodie and a pair of jeans in Shiina's flashback. This later changed, and his usual outfit is shown to be a predominately white and gold formal attire that openly flaunts his family's wealth.

Personality[]

Mikogami is one of the more complex characters, with his personality being fairly different in each of his appearances. He's a spoiled, ill-mannered, entitled, and selfish boy that often becomes very demanding and domineering towards his Sekirei as he's determined to catch and wing as many Sekirei as possible and therefore opposes anyone who stands in his way with a mixture of disdain and open cruelty. He was willing to abandon sense and morality in his pursuit of adding new Sekirei to his "collection" as he attacked MBI's head researcher Sahashi Takami in order to get his hands on Sekirei No.108, Kusano[1]. He can however, be very cheerful at times and carefree as shown through his interactions with Mutsu. Mikogami also views the Sekirei Plan as a exciting game and his desire is to gather all the Jinki in order to become the "champion" of the game. Also, despite his rather immoral actions, he has never outright violated the rules of the Sekirei Plan on panel/screen, and seems to be greatly opposed to doing so, in contrast to Higa Izumi.

While he may act in a childish manner more often than not, Mikogami is actually incredibly intelligent, earning a university degree before most of those his age would have been finished with high school, predicting Higa's modus operandi down to its minute details, and otherwise staying a step ahead of the majority of his competition. Despite his disdain for his parents' neglectful behaviour, Mikogami is willing to use their status, wealth, and connections to investigate Higa, Minaka, and Minato, amongst others.

Mikogami, regardless of his methodology in collecting/gathering his Sekirei, shows a strong desire to keep his "collection" safe. A flashback through Akitsu's eyes revealed that when he called Yomi useless, it was out of sorrow for her leaving him prematurely, thus cementing his hate for the Northern Ashikabi (Minato) because of this and his role in thwarting Mikogami's attempts to wing Kusano. When Karasuba attacked and terminated another one of his Sekirei, he became incensed at the unprovoked attack, screaming about the unfairness of the situation, despite Karasuba merely doing what a Sekirei is expected to do to their enemies during the Plan. All of this shows that although he is certainly flawed, he cares and loves his Sekirei in his own way. Mikogami's appreciation for his Sekirei developed over time due to the fact that his Sekirei helped him to end his loneliness and social isolation, and brought genuine joy and entertainment to his life. This seems to indicate that while Mikogami had attempted to forcibly wing multiple Sekirei, those he did succeed in winging did in fact react to him and were not forced. This appreciation and growth in maturity is cemented throughout the attack on Kamikura Island during the Fourth Stage when his deactivated or terminated Sekirei are suddenly revived by Minato's activation of Kusano's Norito, as well as during Akitsu's fight with Chiyo, Hatae, and Yuna[5].

History[]

Mikogami grew up as the son of wealthy parents who severely neglected him emotionally, using material possessions to satiate him, while showing him no affection or interest in anything apart from his academic achievements. He was once sent to the United States and easily graduated from an American university by the time of his 15th birthday, but was afterwards enrolled in Imperial South Academy, a prominent private school in Tokyo, even though, in Mikogami's opinion, this was a waste of his time, and done to suit their needs, not his. His butler Hasegawa suspects their true reason for doing this was to help Hayato grow socially, but the boy himself suspected that the sole reason he had to attend was to raise his parents' social status, and be used as a trophy child for them to brag about. During this time (shown to be during the winter, 6 months before the proper beginning of the Sekirei Plan), Mutsu reacted to him and defended him against some thugs who beat and attempted to rob him, accepting him afterwards as his Ashikabi even though he would have preferred a woman.[4]

Synopsis[]

Mikogami's first appearance in the story occurs when he is shown to have attempted to forcibly wing Kusano in the arboretum with Yomi's help, resulting in the injury to Takami's eye.[1] In the present, he is shown to be at the arboretum observing the fights between his Sekirei, Minato's Sekirei, and Homura. When Yomi is defeated and terminated by Musubi, he callously calls her useless and orders Akitsu to retreat.[2] He later sends Akitsu and Mitsuha after Shiina, a scheme which is interrupted by Homura.[6] Hayato's schemes ultimately backfire when Mitsuha is terminated by Karasuba while out partolling for unwinged Sekirei to abduct.[7]

Hayato approaches Shiina and Yukari with Mutsu in order to wing the young Sekirei, however he is repelled after Yukari smashes him in the head with a bottle, and later wings Shiina herself.[8]

Hayato's next major appearance comes during the free-for-all hunt for the last unwinged Sekirei-Homura, which he engages in after receiving a text/email from Minaka along with all the other Ashikabi. Hayato elects to send Akitsu into battle while he brings up the rear with Mutsu. [9] Mutsu calls an audible after observing Higa's Sekirei arriving at the scene with Kakizaki in order to keep Hayato safe, leading to Akitsu pulling out as well before she can defeat Homura or Uzume.[10]

Hayato resurfaces during the Third Stage of the Sekirei Plan, matched up against Seo and Sanada in a three-way Sekirei and Ashikabi battle based around being the first team to retrieve a Jinki.[11] Hayato has Mitsuki and Himeko attack Hibiki, Hikari, and two members of the Lovelies trio so that Taki and himself can pursuit the Jinki with the aid of Taki's fog.[12] He is beaten to the Jinki by Shijime, who then drops it down to him by accident, and Mitsuki in turn secures Hayato against a nasty fall with her wires.[13]

After Minato wins the third match of the Third Stage, Hayato appears with Akitsu and Mutsu to prevent Uzume from attacking and stealing his Jinki for Higa, claiming to hate those who break the rules of the game/Plan.[14] He also makes it clear to Minato that he dislikes him for what happened in the first Stage and that intervening on his behalf was something Hayato did out of dislike for Higa's tactics.

During Higa's second attack on Izumo Inn, Mikogami intervenes and arrives on the scene aided by Taki, laying into Higa about violating the rules of the plan to suit his professional needs and how shallow Higa has become in his aims and path in life. He eventually forces Higa to back down and leaves the scene himself.[15]

When the Fourth Stage of the Plan begins, Hayato travels to Kamikura Island alongside his Sekirei, and places his Jinki into a matching receptacle in order to circumvent the localized anti-Ashikabi effects.[16] This leads him and his Sekirei into a match against Sanada and his Sekirei.[17] Yuna, Hatae, and Chiyo arrive after the two banter back and forth, terminating all of Hayato's Sekirei apart from Akitsu, Mutsu, and Himeko.[18] Moved by Mikogami's sincerity and the revelation of the depth of his feelings for her after he states that his Sekirei mean a great deal to him and that he doesn't want to lose anyone else, Akitsu's Sekirei crest begins to glow and then disappears. After her crest disappears, a warm sensation spreads through Akitsu's entire body; she's finally ready to be winged, and Mikogami obliges.[19] Mutsu blasts a hole into the earth to save Hayato, himself, Himeko, and the Lovelies from the effects of Akitsu's Norito.[20] While navigating around the Sekirei ship, Minaka tells Mutsu and Hayato that the ship's systems are damaged, allowing for hostile forces to move in if they so wished.[21] Mikogami later pledges to help Sanada when he is captured by the hostile forces.[22] After suceeding, Mutsu tells Hayato about this concept of the Ashikabi core.[23] After talking things over with Sanada and Minato, he agrees to the plan of having Ku use her Norito. Mitsuki, Taki, and several other fallen Sekirei awaken and find themselves in a bright dream-like grassland. They also find themselves in the midst of invading soldiers, who they quickly disarm and disperse. As they try to regain their bearings Mikogami rushes to them, closely followed by Mutsu. Mikogami is overcome with emotion at being reunited with his lost friends, especially Akitsu, and swears he will never let them be terminated again.[5] He is later incapcitated before Musubi and Minato travel to Kouten to take on Miya. After the plan is over, he travels the world to deepen his bonds with his Sekirei[24], and also assists in another battle at Kamikura in the epilogue chapters.
