Matsu (松), is one of the protagonists of the story and Minato's third Sekirei.

About Matsu

Matsu is a computer genius and hacker. Matsu uses a vast network of satellites and spying devices to gather large amounts of information and has even succeeded in hacking the MBI mainframe computer. Because she has stolen one of the Jinki, Matsu is being chased by MBI and lives in a secret room at the Inn. Matsu serves primarily as Minato's unofficial 'strategist', rarely venturing outside of the Inn and using her vast network of information to aid him. She left Izumo Inn for the first time to free Chiho, and with this to repay Uzume for the big favor she gained in the past when Uzume helped her to escape from MBI after her theft[1][2]. Takami surmises that the reason Matsu stole the Jinki in the first place was to prevent anyone from gathering all of them.[3] Her name literally means a "pine". Miya's nickname for Matsu is "Hentai-Glasses".

Appearance

Matsu has burnt orange hair with long side plaits and orange eyes. She wears a loose-fitting white dress which resembles a cheongsam and glasses. In the omakes, she's seen wearing a piece of cloth to cover her head when she goes to public facilities like hot springs, only done in order to avoid MBI forces and the Disciplinary Squad.

Matsu is being winged

Matsu is Minato's third winged Sekirei and serves as his personal source of information (she often refers to herself as the 'Wisdom' Sekirei). However, despite her high intellect, she is very perverse - she uses her resources to peep on people and often tries to "experiment" (implied to be sexual acts) with Minato and so most call her the 'Shameless' Sekirei. This perversion even extends to her interactions with Homura, who would usually retaliate by comically charring Matsu with pyrokinetic flames, and leaving the latter with torched and curly hair (in the anime, her hair becomes an afro after being burned). She has also expressed some sexual interest in Musubi when she accidentally kissed her. One of her more harmless hobbies is watching the mayhem that Minato and his Sekirei cause every day, which started when she was originally stalking Minato. Matsu also often shows her dislike for Minato's lack of confidence, noting that she wants him to believe in his own possibilities and stated in a private conversation with Miya, that Minato, would be the one to change their fates.[4]

History

Matsu is one of the oldest Sekirei and was once a member of the 'first generation' Disciplinary Squad, defending Kamikura Island. She stole Jinki #8 from MBI, was pursued by MBI and so she left the Disciplinary Squad and hid in Izumo Inn.

Abilities and Powers

Matsu's Access Search

Access Search

Matsu is a Technopath which is the power to access and analyze any electronic device on a telepathic level, but does not have yet the power to control them.[5] She also has shown the ability to telepathically communicate information to other nearby Sekirei. The specific limitations of this aspect of her powers is presently unknown.[6]

Her power served different purposes in the past, where she used it to identify several enemy forces and assist the Discplinary Squad during battle.[7] Matsu's ability however is not only limited to her as she stated that there are several other "brain-type" Sekirei that can manage things like breaking through the security of the MBI network. One of them being Kochou, Sekirei No. 22.[8]

During the Third Invasion of Kamikura Island, she was able to use her Norito to briefly take control of Kouten and use it to destroy most of the helicopters assaulting the island[9].

Synopsis

In the middle of the night, Matsu tries to speak to Kusano to get more information about Minato (to whom she has started to react); but Kusano, seeing Matsu's glasses glinting in the darkness, thinks Matsu is a ghost and runs to Minato.[10] When she tells the others her story the next morning it is obvious that Miya and Uzume are hiding something, that being Matsu's occupancy. Later that day, Matsu tries to get some time alone with Minato by delaying Musubi's return from a shopping trip (by attacking her with laser shots from an MBI satellite while she surprises him in the bath). She attempts to be winged to him; her plan is disrupted when Musubi returns from her shopping trip a little earlier than expected.[11] When Musubi goes to wash up, Matsu restrains her with a special MBI-produced net so she can continue to "experiment" on Minato; but Miya interrupts things and ends it. After everyone gets dressed Matsu formally introduces herself to Minato and his Sekirei and reveals that she is also a resident of Izumo Inn, living in a secret room to hide from MBI. That night Matsu sneaks into Minato's room and quickly wings herself; Miya is not amused at this development due to the rules she expects residents of the Inn to adhere to.

After a close encounter with Karasuba the previous day, Matsu explains to Minato, Musubi and Kusano that with the beginning of the Second Stage (which she secretly fears she triggered with her emergence) Tokyo has now become a deadly battlefield for Sekirei.[12][13] She encourages Minato to wing more Sekirei if they react to him, enabling the Northern group to bolster their forces, this leads into the events where Minato wings Tsukiumi, with Matsu's strategy helping the operation to succeed.[14][15] Matsu soon therafter wonders why there are entries in the MBI database about Sekirei fights without official winners; the unwritten rule regarding combat is that the victorious Sekirei has to wait after a termination and stand guard over the defeated one until MBI arrives, to confirm her win and collect the body of the defeated.[16] After informing Minato of this and his telling the others to be careful, Matsu notices that Uzume's jeans have bloodstains on them when she returns home from an errand.[17]

After hearing of Haruka and Kuno's desire to escape the city, Matsu and Tsukiumi quarrel over the basis of the escape being smart (Matsu) or cowardly (Tsukiumi), leading to Tsukiumi insulting Matsu's lack of combat prowess.[18] Kusano eventually interurpts the argument before it can escalate, dragging both older Sekirei into the baths, where Matsu warns the others to be careful of other Ashikabi's Sekirei, even freindly ones like Uzume herself.[19] Homura's body remains unstable and the Sekirei in great pain, with Matsu offering him some medication in order to dull the pain.[20] Matsu later attends the pre-escape party, and then sets up in her room to guide operations from the inn.[21] After Musubi is terminated by Benitsubasa, Matsu feels Minato's anguish through their bond.[22] After Musubi, Tsukiumi, and Minato recover from their injuries and return home, Matsu is among those who greet them, in her usual odd fashion.[23]

Matsu later quizzes Minato via a "light intelligence test", designed to better prepare him for retaking the college entrance exams, which he aces, leading to Matsu happily informing him that the test was at least 2x as hard as the average entrance examination, further indicating that Minato's main problem is his lack of confidence and composure.[24] After Minato succesfully wings Homura, Matsu welcomes the group back to the inn.[25] After Minato requests that Matsu inform him and the others who don't know about the first invasion of Kamikura Island and other key events regarding the Sekirei, Matsu obliges him and tells multiple stories of her past experiences, such as her time as a member of the First Generation Disciplinary Squad, this is later followed by the start of the Third Stage and its matches.[26]

Minaka announces the second match of the Third Stage, but Minato is left out again, with the group watching from the feeds in Matsu's room. Matsu reveals that she absconded with one of the eight Jinki, which is why MBI was chasing her; thus Minato already has a Jinki, which may be why he didn't get selected for either of the first two matches, as a means of not affording him the advantage of having multiple Jinki right off of the bat. Holding the Jinki, Minato has a vision; Yume's spirit briefly possesses Musubi again and explains that it is a genetic memory from long ago. Miya reveals to Matsu, Kazehana, and Homura that whoever possesses all eight Jinki has the ability to forcefully terminate all Sekirei.[27]

As Minato conveys to the others his and Musubi's encounter with Nanami and Himura during a meeting in Matsu's room, Matsu supports his decision not to help or join them.[28] After learning of Chiho and Uzume's plight in full after Minato's participation in the Third Stage's third match, Matsu accesses Chiho's medical records and the daunting fact that Chiho's illness is said to be incurable with modern means.[29] However, Matsu is motivated to assist both of them to help pay back Uzume with whom she shares a bond and owes a debt to for Uzume's help in escaping MBI. Minato later visits Matsu to inquire as to what happened to the mass escape attempt Nanami and Himura were to participate in.[1] Matsu informs him that eighteen Sekirei were terminated and none escaped. She also says that in order to help with the plan to save Chiho, it's at last time for her to go outside Izumo Inn. Matsu eventually leaves the inn alongside Musubi, Tsukiumi, and Ku, arriving at the hospital Chiho is essentially being imprisoned by Higa within.[30] As they run into opposition, Tsukiumi fights Higa's Sekirei off and Ku and Musubi depart with Chiho as Matsu extracts Chiho's medical records from the hospital database.[31] After a brief brushup with Kochou, Matsu gets the data to Takami, who says that MBI will be able to save Chiho. Matsu and Tsukiumi emerge from their escape route through the sewers to find that Uzume has been terminated.[32]

Matsu is later able to see Miya's shared memories of the past through her bond with Minato, which accounts for a typically perverse moment on her part.[33]

During the fourth match of the third stage, Matsu is present with most of the others at the inn when Musubi suggests a "Sekirei Declaration", a honest revelation about what they'd like to do for themselves, Minato, and the others if they were to be the last remaining Sekirei and help Minato win the Plan.[34] Matsu's systems are later hacked by Kochou when the Eastern Sekirei assault the inn.[35] She later shares a humorous moment with her old Squad team-mates, Mutsu included, and Karasuba not so.[36] Matsu later does her part to help out around the inn after the damage caused by the battles, although her mind seems to be focused on avenging her "loss" to Kochou.[37] Matsu later has her Declaration talk with Minato, and she goes back and forth between conducting a serious conversation about their future and her usual antics.[38]

Matsu accompanies the others to Kamikura when the Fourth Stage begins, taking one of Minato's Jinki to its receptacle alongside Tsukiumi, Musubi, and Minaka.[39] When Minaka bails and Musubi and Tsukiumi fight the Lightning Twins, Matsu converses with Seo about his motivation for staying in the Plan, while also telling the others about the importance of keeping the powers of Kouten under control.[40] Matsu later detects the satellite laser preparing to fire on them (via Kochou receiving orders from Higa) and has Tsukiumi and Homura use their Steam Dragon combo technique to create a steam cloud that diffuses it harmlessly, thus saving everyone in the area from incineration.[41] After the invasion starts, Matsu kisses Minato, activating her Norito and using it to temporarily wrench control of Kouten away from Miya, using its powers to attack the enemy's helicopters with beams of light.[42] Matsu later encourages Ku to use her Norito based on Matsu's theory of what effects it will have on the surrounding area and the terminated Sekirei.[43] Matsu later entrusts Musubi with using some of her power (along with the others) to revive Minato, after which Musubi and Minato defeat Miya on Kouten.[44]

In the aftermath, Matsu works on stabilizing a depowered Miya, which eventually works out, finding a way to recover Musubi without damaging Kouten, and deepening her bond with Minato. After Musubi descends from Kouten, plowing over Minato in the process, Matsu and Minato's other Sekirei show up to share the moment. She also plays a supporting role in the epilogue, appearing in a few chapters.

Notes

  • In the anime, she has ventured outside the Izumo Inn in a supporting combat role on a motorcycle, with Kusano riding shotgun.
  • Matsu is implied to be bisexual due to her attraction to Homura (as Kagari/while male), and Minato, while also expressing some sexual interest in Musubi after accidentally kissing her.
