Haihane (灰翅), also known as the "Blue Sekirei" (蒼い鶺鴒, Aoi Sekirei)[1] is a current member of MBI's Disciplinary Squad, specifically its Third Generation iteration. After her fight with Tsukiumi during the escape mission she and fellow Disciplinary Squad member Benitsubasa attempted to thwart, she maintained a rivalry with Tsukiumi for the remainder of the events of the Sekirei Plan.[2]

Appearance[]

Haihane1

Haihane ready for battle on her first appearance in the anime

Haihane is a slender female Sekirei whose bandage-wrapped form is covered by a tattered black kimono, which is held tight to her body at her midsection by a brown section of leather secured with two small black belts with metal buckles.[1] She wears a studded black choker, and black thigh-high boots. Her hands and arms are covered from fingertip to elbow by a pair of wickedly-sharp barbed metal gauntlets, which vary in colour depending on the section, largely being silver, grey, and black.[1] She has unruly, spiky silver hair, sometimes held in a ponytail at the back by navy blue hair ties, and narrow black eyes, her right eye is typically the only one visible, as her left eye is consistently covered by her hair.[1][2][3][4] Overall, these aspects give her a wicked, macabre, and daunting appearance.

Personality[]

Haihane is often prone to laughter, to the extent that it sometimes hurts her stomach. She enjoys teasing Benitsubasa about her small breasts[3] and futile efforts to attract their Ashikabi, Natsuo Ichinomi. Haihane also seems to be a absentminded at times, which can lead to self-injury; in the anime, after getting contact-drunk off of sake fumes, she stabbed herself twice in the head after forgetting she was still wearing claws[4]. Despite acknowledging Natsuo's homosexuality, Haihane does harbor some affection for her Ashikabi, as shown when he offered to use the Norito and she blushed and stuttered in response. As a member of the Disciplinary Squad, Haihane is expected to follow the orders of her Ashikabi and the rules of the Sekirei Plan. However, she does possess a rebellious edge, during the battle on the bridge, she attacked Shigi Haruka during the attempted escape from the city, despite the rules stating that Sekirei are not to attack humans. Surprisingly, despite her fighting style and acrobatic skill, Haihane admits to being acrophobic (having a fear of heights) which causes her legs to shake and constant, intense sweating.[5] Like Benitsubasa with Musubi, she has acquired a rivalry with one of Minato's Sekirei: the water-controlling Tsukiumi[2].

Abilities and Powers[]

Haihane's lethality lies in her speed and specialized weaponry.[6][7][8] She wields a pair of gauntlets that are armed with scythe-like, barb-tipped claws, and metal bracers that shield her arms up to the elbow.[9] These daunting, razor-sharp weapons are strong/sharp enough to slice through metal and flesh.[6][3] Not factoring in her weapons, Haihane is also immensely strong, fast, resilient, and dexterous.[6][3][10][7][2] As with all other Sekirei, her Norito boosts her power.[10]

Attacks:

  • Zankaku no Tsume (斬獲ノ爪): Talons of Execution[7]
  • Shokei no Tsume (処刑ノ爪): Claws of Execution[2]
  • Repakku no Tsume/Shrieking Claws [11]
  • Senretsu no Tsume/Claws of Thunder (Norito attack/technique)[10]

Norito: "Wire claws of my pledge, tear apart the guards imprisoning my Ashikabi!"[10]

History[]

Nothing about Haihane's past is known in detail, although it can be assumed that she was raised by MBI in much the same way as Tsukiumi, Musubi, and the other Sekirei were, received tuning and training, was chosen to be a member of the Third Generation Disciplinary Squad, and was allowed by MBI to begin participating in the Sekirei Plan. At some point she met Natsuo and was winged by him.

Synopsis[]

Haihane first appears during the Second Stage of the Sekirei Plan, conversing with Benitsubasa, who calls her by her epithet, and tells her that they'll soon have a chance to have fun.[12] She later confronts Minato, Musubi, Haruka, and Kuno, alongside Benitsubasa, as Haruka and Kuno attempt to escape Teito and the Plan.[9] Musubi charges the two, after Haihane notes that it seems that their enemies expected them to arrive at the bridge, later watching Benitsubasa and Musubi clash.[1] Haihane snickers at Musubi's air-headed comments, and Benitsubasa's anger and frustration as a result of said comments, noting that the two are opposites despite being somewhat similar as well.[13] After watching Benitsubasa thrash Musubi and threaten Minato, Haihane continues to tease her partner about her cup size, and her unrequited love for Natsuo.[3] Benitsubasa then claims that she'd be willing to kill Haihane and Karasuba to get Natsuo all to herself, causing Haihane to accept the challenge and assert that Benitsubasa wouldn't be able to kill her or Karasuba.[3] On Benitsubasa's orders, she confronts Haruka and Kuno, announcing that they've chosen to die by attempting to escape, before slashing Haruka across his face.[3] This angers and frightens Kuno, who uses her Norito after kissing Haruka, singing a song that begins to sap the energy from Haihane's body.[3] Haihane, now forced to the ground, comments on the song calming her soul, she attempts to block her ears with her claws still attached, injuring herself in the process.[4] When Kuno tires and the song fades, she stalks the two from behind, but is knocked off balance by water generated by Tsukiumi.[4] Tsukiumi attacks the two with her Hydra Blast technique, and Benitsubasa tells Haihane that she'll leave the water-controlling Sekirei to her.[6] The two clash, with Haihane's slashes and Tsukiumi's water attacks further damaging the bridge as they furiously attempt to outpace each other.[6] The two clash at close range, and one of Tsukiumi's attacks sends Haihane over the side of the bridge and into the water.[6] The manga and anime diverge from this point, in the former, Haihane remains out of the fight, and Yume only fights and defeats Benitsubasa, in the latter she fights and defeats them both. [14] After Haihane makes it back onto the bridge, she confronts Musubi and Kazehana, but is soundly defeated by Kazehana's Flower Whirlwind technique.[15]

Haihane later appears during the third match of the Third Stage at Teito Junction alongside Benitsubasa to represent Natsuo against Minato's team and Higa's team.[16] All three teams listen to Minaka's announcement, that the third match will be a battle royale, the last team standing wins.[17] As Benitsubasa charges forward to fight Musubi once again, Haihane hangs back, later protecting Natsuo from falling debris.[18] She turns around in time after conversing with Natsuo to block an attack from Oriha, Oriha introduces herself, and the two prepare to fight as Minato falls down from the sky in a heap a few feet behind them.[2] Haihane charges, using her Claws of Execution technique to slash through Oriha's attacks, startling her, and the two continue to trade attacks, with Haihane smirking and snickering as she notices Oriha tiring.[2] Haihane bullrushes Oriha once more, using her Claws of Execution technique once again, cutting through the other girl's top as she continues to laugh.[7] Haihane's equilibrium is compromised by Benitsubasa's rage-fuelled, ground-shaking attacks, and Oriha lands a hit on her with one of her chakrams, which concerns Natsuo, leading him to offer Haihane the chance to use her Norito.[7] Haihane considers this, growing flustered at the thought of kissing Natsuo, but continues to defend him as Oriha rapidly attempts to kill them both.[7] Haihane stalks towards Oriha after emerging unscathed from her attacks, and announces that "playtime is over", using her Talons of Execution technique to defeat the other Sekirei.[7] Haihane later confronts Tsukiumi when she arrives in the area, remembering her defeat at Tsukiumi's hands, which almost caused her to drown.[19] Spurred on by rage, she attacks Tsukiumi, and the two clash until the Disciplinary Squad is ordered to deploy elsewhere to counter another escape attempt.[20] Haihane having just freed herself from a headlock Benitsubasa put her in following an argument over who Natsuo would kiss first to activate their Norito.[20]

Later in the Third Stage, the thwarted escape is shown, Haihane, Karasuba, and Benitsubasa having slaughtered enough Ashikabi and Sekirei to form a pile.[21]

Haihane and Benitsubasa are soon called upon to accompany Natsuo and retrieve the bodies of Uzume, Shi, and Sai from Izumo Inn.[22]

Haihane, Karasuba, and Benitsubasa observe the start of the final match of the Third Stage from the top of a crane in a harbour near the site of the final match, with Karasuba informing the other two that it is "time for work."[5]

Haihane is seen after the match looking on as Karasuba stalks away and Benitsubasa reports back to Natsuo on their successful mission, "disciplining" more rule-breakers, as a pile of bodies laid out in front of an anguished Ashikabi is shown.[23] They later encounter Shijime, who excitedly greets Benitsubasa, as Haihane looks on, teasing the two.[24]

Haihane is briefly seen trailing behind Benitsubasa and Natsuo when the Ashikabi and Sekirei first arrive on Kamikura Island at the start of the Fourth Stage.[25]

After Kaho and Karasuba's battle concludes, and Minato's party repels Higa's, Haihane, Natsuo, and Benitsubasa approach them.[26] Kaiha and Ichiya jump to Higa's defence when Haihane casually mentions cutting him up into pieces.[26] She ends up clashing with Tsukiumi, using her Shrieking Claws technique to counter Tsukiumi's attacks.[8] The two reach a stalemate, and Haihane retreats with her Ashikabi and Benitsubasa, as the duo reflect on the day Natsuo met them and vice versa, Haihane coming to realize that she has feelings for Natsuo the same as her partner, and Natsuo coming to appreciate them more.[8] Haihane sees Tsukiumi's technique (Sea God's Banquet) utilized to attack the enemy forces invading the island.[27] Following Karasuba's defeat, and the enemy being driven back, Haihane activates her Norito by kissing Natsuo, using the power to attack Ichiya and Kaiha alongside Benitsubasa, who had also been kissed, allowing her to use hers.[10] However, she is incapacitated alongside all of the Sekirei and Ashikabi barring the two (Musubi and Minato) meant to fight Miya on Kouten as part of the Final Stage of the Plan.[28]

After Minato wins the Plan, and all Ashikabi and Sekirei recover and reactivate, she is seen a year later, accompanying Natsuo (who is conversing with Minato on his phone) and Benitsubasa on a mission, appearing content and as ever, teasing Benitsubasa.[29]

Anime and Manga Differences[]

In the anime (Season 2), Haihane and Benitsubasa directly antagonize Minato and his Sekirei in an arc that leads to Kazehana's winging, which happens later than in the manga, as well as discuss Yume, Karasuba, Musubi, and the history of the Disciplinary Squad while showering in a moment not covered in the manga. Additionally, Haihane first appears in the anime (season 1) by confronting Haruka and Kuno as they almost succeed in fleeing the city via sneaking past a security checkpoint, whereas in the manga, Haruka and Kuno never make it out that far until the night of the escape plan, and she debuted via a short conversation with Benitsubasa that didn't fully reveal their appearances, followed by a proper debut during the escape plan. Like Beni (who fights Kazehana), Haihane appears in the anime-only/non-canon final few episodes of Season 2, fighting Tsukiumi in MBI/Teito Tower.
