Benitsubasa (紅翼), is Sekirei #105, also known as the "Red Sekirei" (緋い鶺鴒, Akai Sekirei)[1] and a member of the Third Generation Disciplinary Squad. After her fight with Musubi and Yume, who she believed to be Musubi, she fosters a strong hatred towards Musubi due to being thrashed in her fight against Yume. She then spent the whole third match of the third stage of the Sekirei Plan looking for Musubi to finish their fight, beginning a rivalry with the other close combat-type Sekirei in the process. Although the rules of the Plan say not to attack Ashikabi, she is fond of breaking this amongst other rules, and has a hot-headed personality. Her name (beni+tsubasa) means "crimson wings" literally.

Appearance[]

Benitsubasa

Usual Outfit

Benitsubasa wears a black kimono-like shirt with one sleeve missing, and has pink hair which she wears in a side ponytail with two daisy clips, as well as pink eyes. Her body is very athletic, more toned than most other Sekirei but not overly muscular. She has small breasts that haven't grown by a single millimeter and is an A cup (according to Haihane, and evident from moments where Beni is nude or half naked). in the English dub of the anime, Kazehana calls Benitsubasa "Pettanko" ("Washboard") in response to being called "Obaa-San" ("Grandma") before their fight. She is a younger Sekirei that has the appearance of a cheerful teenager though her appearance doesn't reflect her personality as she is short-tempered, unlike Haihane who's always calm and has fun teasing Benitsubasa.

Personality[]

Benitsubasa is a very short-tempered Sekirei prone to violent outbursts and poor impulse control. She's aggressive to the point that she doesn't show any mercy to either Ashikabi or Sekirei as she was willing to kill both Minato and Higa even though it's strictly against the rules to attack an Ashikabi[2]. She has a habit of sticking her tongue out while fighting (one of many behaviours she employs to mock her opponents) and claims to hate those who are stupid in her eyes (such as Musubi) although she herself has the occasional dull or slow moment. She developed a deep hatred for Musubi after their fight during the night of Haruka and Kuno's escape, and rushes for Musubi on sight for a proper rematch with the goal to humiliate and kill her[3]. Out of the three Disciplinary Squad members she is the only one who openly admits that she "loves" her Ashikabi. She has stated that she wants to "open his eyes" (somehow make him attracted to women through her charm and good looks, as Haihane said he was gay, which Benitsubasa did not refute) and then openly admitted that she is plotting to kill both Haihane and Karasuba, so she can have him all to herself[4].

Abilities and Powers[]

Benitsubasa is a hand-to-hand fighter, similar to Musubi, but as stated by Haihane they are complete opposites: Benitsubasa is a well-trained martial artist, who always fights to kill, while Musubi fights more instinctively until she is trained by Miya. Like Musubi she is superhumanly strong, even by the higher standards of Sekirei, and she can use her immense strength to create shockwaves and earthquakes for longer ranged attacks. She has comparable speed, reflexes, and durability to Musubi as well.

Attacks[]

  • Shockwave[5] - By punching the ground (or whatever surface she is standing on) Benitsubasa can send a directed linear shockwave through it towards her opponent.
  • Shredder[4] - A Hadoken-style attack that inflicts severe damage on Beni's opponent with a short-range burst of concentrated energy.
  • Pulverizer (粉☆砕)[4] - A Hadoken-style energy manipulation attack similar to the Shredder.
  • Gekeishin (激☆震, Extreme Earthquake)[2] - Visually similar to the Shockwave but targeting a broader area instead of being focused at a single direction or target.
  • Blood Festival[6]-A wild and vicious overhand punch/swing punch that generates a massive amount of wind and is capable of one-hit KOing a target (terminating Oshino by inflicting damage).
  • Bakushin[7] (Soul Explosion)-An energy-based attack that creates a massive, honing explosion after Benitsubasa swipes her arms forward in an arching motion (Norito technique).

Major Battles[]

  • Benitsubasa vs. Musubi (won or inconclusive)
  • Benitsubasa & Haihane vs.Tsukiumi (inconclusive)
  • Benitsubasa vs. Unknown Sekirei (won)
  • Benitsubasa vs. Kazehana (several times, typically lost or inconclusive)
  • Benitsubasa vs. Homura (inconclusive)
  • Benitsubasa vs. Oshino (won, one-hit KO)
  • Benitsubasa and Haihane vs. Kaiha and Ichiya (interrupted)
  • Benitsubasa and Haihane vs Yume (lost)

History[]

Nothing is known about her past minus the commonalities between all Sekirei due to their affiliation with MBI. At some point prior to the Sekirei Plan she joined the Disciplinary Squad and was winged by Natsuo.

Synopsis[]

Benitsubasa first appears during the Second Stage of the Sekirei Plan, conversing with Haihane, who calls her by her epithet, telling "Blue" that they'll soon have a chance to have fun.[8] She later confronts Minato, Musubi, Haruka, and Kuno, alongside Haihane, as Haruka and Kuno attempt to escape Teito and the Plan.[9] Musubi charges the two, after Haihane notes that it seems that their enemies expected them to arrive at the bridge, later watching Benitsubasa and Musubi clash.[10] Haihane snickers at Musubi's air-headed comments, and Benitsubasa's anger and frustration as a result of said comments, noting that the two are opposites despite being somewhat similar as well.[11] After watching Benitsubasa thrash Musubi and threaten Minato, Haihane continues to tease her partner about her cup size, and her unrequited love for Natsuo.[12] Benitsubasa then claims that she'd be willing to kill Haihane and Karasuba to get Natsuo all to herself, causing Haihane to accept the challenge and assert that Benitsubasa wouldn't be able to kill her or Karasuba.[12] On Benitsubasa's orders, Haihane confronts Haruka and Kuno, announcing that they've chosen to die by attempting to escape, before slashing Haruka across his face.[12] This angers and frightens Kuno, who uses her Norito after kissing Haruka, singing a song that begins to sap the energy from Haihane's body.[12] When Kuno tires and the song fades, Haihane stalks the two from behind, but is knocked off balance by water generated by Tsukiumi.[13] Tsukiumi attacks the two with her Hydra Blast technique, and Benitsubasa tells Haihane that she'll leave the water-controlling Sekirei to her.[14] Benitsubasa mocks and belittles Minato, then goes back on the offensive against Musubi, pummelling her with multiple techniques and savage blows alike until her Sekirei Crest vanishes.[14] Later on, after fighting Tsukiumi to a stalemate, Benitsubasa is easily overpowered and defeated by Yume, who briefly reawakens to help revive Musubi.[15]

Benitsubasa later appears during the third match of the Third Stage at Teito Junction alongside Haihane to represent Natsuo against Minato's team and Higa's team.[16] All three teams listen to Minaka's announcement, that the third match will be a battle royale, the last team standing wins.[17] As Benitsubasa charges forward to fight Musubi once again, Haihane hangs back, later protecting Natsuo from falling debris.[6] After being separated from her Ashikabi and her fellow Sekirei, Benitsubasa attacks Oshino and defeats her in one hit.[6] Benitsubasa later encounters Toyotama, Ichiya, and Higa, becoming incensed by Higa blatantly breaking the rules by having two more Sekirei accompany him to the battle, for five total, although Ichiya simply mocks her for losing her cool.[18] Everyone's equilibrium is compromised by Benitsubasa's rage-fuelled, ground-shaking attacks made in an attempt to take out Higa (her Extreme Quake), and Oriha lands a hit on Haihane with one of her chakrams, which concerns Natsuo, leading him to offer Haihane the chance to use her Norito.[19] Benitsubasa finally gets a rematch against Musubi when the two encounter one another in the rubble.[20] Spurred on by rage, she attacks Musubi, and the two clash until Musubi casually punches Benitsubasa away, stating that she doesn't have time to fight, needing to find Minato.[20] This results in her encountering Homura who fights her to protect a nearby Minato, and Natsuo offering to kiss Benitsubasa and amplify her power with a Norito when she faces down Musubi once more.[21] The Disciplinary Squad is then ordered by Minaka to deploy elsewhere in order to counter another escape attempt, resulting in them having to surrender the match and the chance for the winner's prize (the Jinki).[22] Benitsubasa wrenches Haihane into a headlock following an argument over who Natsuo would kiss first to activate their Norito, but they depart nonetheless.[22]

Later in the Third Stage, the thwarted escape is shown, Haihane, Karasuba, and Benitsubasa having slaughtered enough Ashikabi and Sekirei to form a pile.[23]

Haihane and Benitsubasa are soon called upon to accompany Natsuo and retrieve the bodies of Uzume, Shi, and Sai from Izumo Inn.[24]

Haihane, Karasuba, and Benitsubasa observe the start of the final match of the Third Stage from the top of a crane in a harbour near the site of the final match, with Karasuba informing the other two that it is "time for work."[25]

Benitsubasa later reports back to Natsuo on their successful mission, "disciplining" more rule-breakers, as a pile of bodies laid out in front of an anguished Ashikabi is shown.[26] They later encounter Shijime, who excitedly greets Benitsubasa, as Haihane looks on, teasing the two.[27]

Benitsubasa and Natsuo are seen approaching the site, with Haihane behind them, when the Ashikabi and Sekirei first arrive on Kamikura Island at the start of the Fourth Stage.[28]

After Kaho and Karasuba's battle concludes, and Minato's party repels Higa's, Haihane, Natsuo, and Benitsubasa approach them.[29] Kaiha and Ichiya jump to Higa's defence when Haihane casually mentions cutting him up into pieces.[29] She ends up clashing with Tsukiumi, using her Shrieking Claws technique to counter Tsukiumi's attacks.[30]The two reach a stalemate, and Haihane retreats with her Ashikabi and Benitsubasa, as the duo reflect on the day Natsuo met them and vice versa, Haihane coming to realize that she has feelings for Natsuo the same as her partner, Beni further confirming how she feels about Natsuo, and Natsuo coming to appreciate them more.[30] Benitsubasa sees Tsukiumi's technique (Sea God's Banquet) utilized to attack the enemy forces invading the island.[31] Following Karasuba's defeat, and the enemy being driven back, Beni activates her Norito by kissing Natsuo, using the power to attack Ichiya and Kaiha alongside Haihane, who had also been kissed, allowing her to use hers.[7] However, she is incapacitated alongside all of the Sekirei and Ashikabi barring the two (Musubi and Minato) meant to fight Miya on Kouten as part of the Final Stage of the Plan, after begging Musubi and Minato to help Natsuo.[32]

After Minato wins the Plan, and all Ashikabi and Sekirei recover and reactivate, she is seen a year later, accompanying Natsuo (who is conversing with Minato on his phone) and Haihane on a mission, with both appearing content and as ever, Haihane teasing Benitsubasa.[33]

Anime and Manga Differences[]

In the anime (Season 2), Haihane and Benitsubasa directly antagonize Minato and his Sekirei in an arc that leads to Kazehana's winging, which happens later than in the manga, as well as discuss Yume, Karasuba, Musubi, and the history of the Disciplinary Squad while showering in a moment not covered in the manga. Additionally, Haihane first appears in the anime (season 1) by confronting Haruka and Kuno as they almost succeed in fleeing the city via sneaking past a security checkpoint, whereas in the manga, Haruka and Kuno never make it out that far until the night of the escape plan, and both Haihane and Benitsubasa debuted via a short conversation that didn't fully reveal their appearances, followed by a proper debut during the escape plan. Like Haihane (who fights Tsukiumi), Benitsubasa appears in the anime-only/non-canon final few episodes of Season 2, fighting Kazehana in MBI/Teito Tower.
